Three essays on actuarial social security theory
2015

Converting Retirement Benefit into a Life Care Annuity with Graded Benefits: How Costly Would it Actually Be?
2016
This paper deals with life care annuities, i.e. bundled products comprising a life annuity and long-term care insurance. It aims to assess the cost of converting retirement benefit into a life care annuity with graded benefits using a pre-existing public pay-as-you-go pension scheme. With this objective in mind, we present an actuarial method based on array calculus for valuing this type of life care annuity. The health dynamics of the annuitant rely on a reversible illness-death multistate framework. The paper contains a numerical example in which mortality and disability assumptions are based on data from the USA and Australia, although this should be viewed simply as an illustration. In …

The value of integrative risk management for insurance products with guarantees
2001
Insurance liabilities are converging with capital markets products (e.g. derivatives and securitizations), thereby increasing the demand for integrated asset and liability management strategies. This article compares the value-added by an integrative approach-based on scenario optimization modelling-relative to traditional risk management methods. The authors present some examples of products offered by the insurance industry in Italy, and apply the results of the analysis to the design of competitive insurance policies. © Emerald Backfiles 2007.
Ethical Behaviour and Operating Performance of Insurance Broker Firms
2015
In this research we investigate whether there is a relationship between the ethical behaviour of insurance brokers and their operating performance. Specifically, we focus on the practice of deferring the premiums charged to clients in order to invest them in short–term financial products and, as a result, gain an additional financial return to their traditional sources of income. We consider this practice to be an unethical behaviour since uninformed clients, that is, those who are not aware of the legal process of brokerage, expect the broker to immediately process the policy with the insurance company once the premium has been paid. We find that the better the performance and the larger t…
Motor Vehicles Not Used in Road Traffic Are Also Subject to Compulsory Insurance in Europe - CJEU Clarification in Case C-80/17
2019
The article analyses a recent significant case in the Court of Justice of the European Union on the extent of compulsory insurance in the field of motor insurance. The judgment delivered by the Grand Chamber of the CJEU on 04 September 2018 clarifies the obligation to conclude a motor insurance contract in a situation when a motor vehicle is no longer intended to be used in road traffic. If previously there was no doubt that motor vehicles that are used in road traffic are subject to compulsory insurance, it was unclear whether compulsory insurance in the field of motor insurance also extends to vehicles which are no longer intended to be used in road traffic. The Court formulated the ‘thre…
Gingival recession and associated factors in a homogeneous Mexican adult male population : a cross-sectional study
2011
Background: Diverse variables are implicated in the pathogenesis of gingival recession; more detailed knowledge about the relationship between the clinical presentation of gingival recession and assorted risk indicators may lead to improved patient monitoring, early intervention, and subsequent prevention. The objective was to evaluate clinically gingival recession in a homogeneous Mexican adult male population and to determine the strength of association with related factors. Method: A cross-sectional study was carried out in a largely homogeneous group in terms of ethnic background, socioeconomic status, gender, occupation, and medical/dental insurance, in Campeche, Mexico. Outcome comparison of integrated psycho‐oncological care versus unstructured care—Results of a non‐randomised open‐label two‐arm trial
2019
Objective To compare patients' experiences with a systematic, integrated psycho-oncological care (IC) model to experiences with "care as usual" (CAU). Methods To improve patients' knowledge about psychosocial support options and to facilitate use, an IC model was developed by psycho-oncologists and a health insurance company and implemented in one German cancer care facility. Using a parallel, non-randomised design, these patients' experiences were compared to CAU patients. In 2015, both patient groups received questionnaires 6-12 months post-inpatient treatment. Main outcomes were awareness, use and opinion of psycho-oncological care (PC) and anxiety level (Generalized Anxiety Disorder Sca…
Clinical and economic impact of drug eluting beads in transarterial chemoembolization for hepatocellular carcinoma
2015
Summary What is known and objective Drug eluting beads (DEBs) theoretically improve the efficacy and safety of transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Nonetheless, their economic profile has not been assessed. Our retrospective before/after study aimed to compare efficacy, safety and economic profile of two strategies of TACE without (Period 1) or with the possibility of using DEBs (Period 2). Methods All HCC patients treated by TACE in our hospital between March 2006 and May 2013 were included. Economic analyses were performed from the French Public Health Insurance point of view according to the French Diagnosis-Related Group prospective payment system an…
